My Summer Face Saviors

It’s Summer, and nothing tells me it’s that time of year more than the state of my skin. My legs have scales, my face doesn’t know whether it needs oil or a good tonic and my hands are constantly dry. In addition, being in the pollution capital, Shanghai, for over a month my skin is still recovering from the humid carbon monoxide facial it received every day on my travels. To my rescue are these nifty beauty products you see before you! They’re my knights in chemical armour, and as I prepare to head over to Brasil, will be some of the things I take with me to keep my face looking as fresh as possible!

Clarisonic: I will be writing a post later as to why this was the best investment I’ve made, but for now I’ll briefly mention why this wonder is staying in my suitcase this summer. It’s compact, and with three cleaning settings, covers everything from daily ‘soft’ cleaning to a high speed, deep pore cleanse. Depending on my requirements, I usually start my day with this device, spreading on some of the clarisonic cleaning gel (which came with the package) or using my Neutrogena scrub for my twice a week ‘deep clean’.

Neutrogena: Now, this is not my usual exfoliator. I’ve actually just run out of MAC Volcanic Ash scrub (which I highly recommend to everyone regardless of skin type) and haven fallen back on an hold favourite. It’s great for anyone with oily skin (as I am prone to having in the summer for some bizarre reason) but I admit that it can be a little rough for those with sensitive skin/dry skin. Since it’s acne prevention, I’d say stick with something with more moisture unless you are, of course, prone to outbreaks, in which case this is the perfect product for controlling oily skin.

Bioderma: When I am tried and feel grubby, and just can’t be bothered for the whole cleaning ritual, Bioderma is there for me! I’ve used this product for years for dry or normal skin and it has never caused any problems. I find that during summer I don’t always have time to spend my morning tarting up, but using a good cleanser like this always makes me feel fresh faced, as if I’d spend 20 minutes preening myself. For a super clean effect I put this on after using my clarisonic.

Kiehl’s: Amazonian white clay! Whatever you are, you’re a miracle worker! I’ve been using the toner (big bottle) daily for over a week and my skin is tighter, and the unsightly pores on my nose, far less visible. It smells a bit funny – not unpleasant, just a bit like earth, but for the silky smoothness and firmness of my skin, it is worth the mild earthy scent. To double up, I dot a bit of the pore minimizing lotion (also Kiehls) in the morning and evening just to help the process along. Because of its size, I’ll probably only take the lotion along with me in the suitcase, and save the toner for my return!

Origins: First thing I bought when I went to China was this highly recommended product. Origins doesn't seem to exist in Dubai, so as soon as I went for my internship I bagged this bad boy... I just don't know how I've lived without it for so long! It smells dreamy, the texture is light and pleasant (not oily, which is something I can't stand on my face) and leaves my skin feeling tight and clean, whether I've used a cleanser or not! If you haven't got this and have a few bob to spend, make this your go-to moisturizer.
